Markets Comparison: Kikuubo Lane vs Market Street

The two markets are located in Kampala City's Central Business District. But their positions differ.

The position of Kikuubo Lane is almost parallel to North-South direction. The Sun path is then almost perpendicular to Kikuubo Lane. In North, limited by Kyagwe Road and in South by Namirembe Road.

Unlike Kikuubo Lane, Market Street's position is almost parallel to West-East direction, this means Market Street is parallel to the Sun path. In a day, it experience all moment heat and light from the Sun. In West, it is limited by Burton Street and in East by Entebbe Road

Due to weak enclosure in Kikuubo Lane, the sun does not heat the ground (the buildings are heigh while the street is narrow). Stakeholders experience a shady environment. However, in Market street the Buildings are lower and the street is wide enough. To the visual appreciation, it appear to be an open space than Kikuubo Lane which seems to be confined.

Both Markets are populated but Kikuubo Lane has a greater density of people than Market street. The movement of people in Kikuubo Lane is organic, whereby there is no straight direction due to the density of people. In Market Street, pedestrian zone is distinct to vehicle zone because the density of vehicle is higher the the density of people, so people walk along buildings. The pedestrian path is wider than in Kikuubo Lane. The design influence the fabric in movement of people and vehicles.

  • Openness of Market Street

  • Not busy during the day

  • High Vehicles Traffic in Market Street

  • Pedestrian crossing the road

  • Always busy in the morning and in the evening

  • Busy Kikuubo Lane, with high density of people, which make the market vibrant.

  • The weak enclosure

  • Vehicle movements

  • Movable stalls

  • Temporary displacement of venders
